Power Hum Henley Shirt

In folk tradition, the Buddha is believed to have protective deities, often appearing as a pair known as the Hum and Haw Generals. Statues of these figures can still be found in early temples across places like Taipei's Dadaocheng and Beijing's old city areas.

Unlike southern martial arts, which often include specific sounds such as the "crane drumming” or "tiger roar" to enhance certain techniques, northern martial arts do not adhere to strict vocal patterns. However, many northern martial artists utilize a breathing method known as Hum and Haw. Vincent Mei, a Baji boxing master based in New York, studied vocal techniques in his youth and described it well: Hum comes from the chest, expanding the upper body and activating defense; Haw comes from the diaphragm, engaging the core and releasing power.

In everyday life, a natural "hum" sound might occur when someone is hit unexpectedly, while a "haw" sound often accompanies the effort of lifting something heavy or pushing a strong force.

Hum and Haw breathing represents two energies—chest and abdomen, offense and defense.

The Henley shirt is a classic style, offering a slightly more casual alternative to the traditional crewneck pullover. This time, we've incorporated Fly by Knight's unique Thorough Loops design, with an open-cut chest area to allow freedom of movement and the easy expression of "Hum Power" whenever needed.

During the design process, I had a friend from Milan, Italy, try on the shirt to check the sizing. To my surprise, as soon as he put it on, he instantly loved it and asked what the name of the garment was.

As I watched this shirt, now worn by someone from the fashion capital of Milan, naturally exude both elegance and strength, I spontaneously named it the "Hum Power Henley."

This style emerged from assembly line production during the Industrial Revolution and does not truly fit the human body. However, we refuse to compromise. Inspired by the "tōngbèi" concept in martial arts, we’ve rediscovered the ideal T-shirt cut, where the arms are like fists connected through the back, forming a unified whole.
